The Safety of Fire

Have you ever removed your heart from pure

Driven snow?

Have you ever watched the ice melt from your hands

Tinged in violet

The color of the darkest rose,

Hiding in pale moonlight?

Have you felt the crystals yielding?

Warmed by your touch?

Your breath

As it begins to come alive?

Hammering at the cold?

Breaking the ice

Melting it into a flood of hot fluids

That finds every crevice of

Your palm and fingers and wrist?

“I am alive,” it’s saying.

“I belong to you.”

Now remove me from this hallowed ground

The one hiding frozen ghosts and succubi

Prayers lost in a void of stars

Hiding behind a sky of skin,

Ready to keep us safe from the fires and ice.
